Privacy Policy

Proper Strokes lets you practice handwriting offline without an account. Your handwriting and phrase lists stay on your device. We use TelemetryDeck for usage analytics and RevenueCat to manage support purchases, as described below.

What stays on your device

• Your handwritten drawings, characters and phrase text are not sent to our analytics or purchase services.
• Your full practice history and practice preferences are stored locally. Some measurements derived from practice and some device settings are sent with usage analytics, as explained below.

Usage analytics

We use TelemetryDeck to understand how people practice, improve the learning flow, and measure app usage and return visits. Analytics starts when the app launches and can send data when connected to the internet.

The information sent includes:

• App sessions, first-use information, event timing, session counts and durations, and the number of active days.
• Whether you are exploring or reviewing, and actions such as saving, remembering, forgetting or skipping an item.
• Broad categories of how closely your writing matches before and after revealing the answer, whether you write after revealing it, the ratio of attempted strokes to the target stroke count, and your cumulative explored-character count. Raw matching scores and the writing itself are not sent.
• A hashed device-derived identifier, a session identifier, device model, operating system, app version and build, screen properties, language, locale, region, time zone, and appearance and accessibility preferences.

These are individual usage events that we analyze together. The hashed identifier lets TelemetryDeck recognize repeat usage without receiving the original device identifier. TelemetryDeck states that it further anonymizes identifiers and does not store IP addresses. See its Privacy FAQ and Privacy Policy.

Purchases

• Support purchases are processed by the App Store. Apple handles your payment details; we do not receive your payment card information.
• RevenueCat processes purchase history and transaction information using a generated anonymous app user identifier, along with technical information such as device and operating system details. We use it to validate and manage purchases and view purchase statistics.

Third parties

• Apple: app distribution and payments. See Apple’s Privacy Policy.
• RevenueCat: purchase management and purchase analytics. See RevenueCat’s Privacy Policy.
• TelemetryDeck: usage analytics, as described above.
• Cloudflare: website hosting and website analytics, as described below. See Cloudflare’s Privacy Policy.

Website visits

This website uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to measure visits and page performance. This can include the pages viewed, referring site, browser, operating system, device type, country and page-load measurements. Opening a hosted page from inside the app can also generate website analytics. These measurements are separate from the app’s TelemetryDeck practice events. See Cloudflare’s Web Analytics documentation.

Children’s privacy

The app may be used in educational settings, including by children. The analytics and purchase processing described in this policy also apply to that use. We do not ask children to provide their name or contact details in the app. Parents and guardians should supervise usage and can contact us with privacy concerns.

Retention and deletion

Deleting the app removes its local practice data. We can’t restore deleted local data. Deleting the app does not delete analytics events or purchase records already sent to service providers.

TelemetryDeck currently provides no guaranteed deletion schedule for stored analytics events. Purchase records are retained to manage purchases and meet applicable legal obligations; deleting the app does not remove Apple’s transaction history. For privacy or deletion requests, contact paul@properstrokes.com. We may be unable to identify your analytics events from your name or email because they use an anonymized identifier.

Changes

If our practices change, we’ll update this policy and the “Last updated” date.
